Profound emotions through letterforms

Yuugen is a typeface inspired by Hayao Miyazaki. The term ‘Yuugen’ is made up of two Japanese characters that translates to having an awareness of the universe that triggers an emotional response too deep and mysterious for words. Ever since I was young, Miyazaki seemed mysterious in my eyes and it was fascinating to dive into his stories of another world.

The typeface expresses his style of animation and his personality. It is constructed with the intent of forms being disconnected from one another. The gaps within it mimic the flow and fluidity of his human-like gestures embedded in his animations.

To design a typeface that plays homage to a director I respect and admire
